v. How to be a modern monk

Monasticism – with its signature haircuts, long robes, cloisters, ritual fasting and heavy prayer schedules – has been in existence around the world for many centuries. It’s unlikely, however, to cross our minds today as a remotely plausible career path: it’s too bound up with hard-to-believe doctrines about the need for sexual abstinence, the survival of the soul after death and the will of God.

Yet in a limited, though significant and very unexpected, way we perhaps do wish to become more like monks. That’s because at its core (if we strip away the elaborate theology) monasticism points to a moving ideal: the possibility of uniting simplicity with dignity. It fuses minimalistic external presentation with beauty and spiritual elevation.
